Diary Entry #6

After brainstorming the basic stroyline of my theatrical trailer I have come to the idea of what I want my trailer to feel like as well as the upbeat comedic style I want to impose early on in the trailer. But thinking of potential shots has left me worrying that I am going to repeat moments in my trailer, which of course I don't want to happen. For this reason ,in the coming days I intend to watch a variety of trailers and films both near and far from my genre in order to seek fresh inspiration for shot types/angles and cuts as I think this will encourage me to be even more adventurous with my filming and editing technique. However its during times like this that I've looked back at my mood board and trailer order analysis -which taught me that I don't need to be extravagant to create a good trailer, instead I need to focus on quick cuts from different perspectives to create a flowing trailer.

StoryBoard: Preparation

Today I've been investigating potential methods for storyboarding my film and having looked at similar templates I used for last years film. I am thinking of considering this as a potential route I could take. The idea of an electronic format does appeal to me as I will be able to change my ideas more freely but I am worried that the online version may become too focused on the picture itself rather than the description and information about the shot- which will ultimately be more important when filming as I can refer back to the detail of analysis rather than a similar picture of my ideas. After considering the two I think the simple format enables me to achieve the most accurate perception of my idea and I can easily change it during filming if need be, whereas the online version is less readily available.

Diary Entry #5

So I've just made a mood board of the types of themes and emotions I want to capture in my trailer, as well as a small incite into my storyline- doing this activity has really opened my eyes to what I want my story to consist of and has given me a clearer of key moments I want to see and how I want to portray them to my audience. All in all one of the most useful activities I've done so far

Mood Board

This is the Mood Board for my production, I combined the general atmosphere and ideas that I want to emulate in my trailer, which as you can clearly see ,is a mixture of humour and friendship- these being the two key themes I want to include in my theatrical trailer. By creating a mood board this encouraged me to picture the type of themes I want to create within my film, which will prove to be something really important when I begin storyboarding as I can look back and remind myself of what emotions I want my audience to experience.

Intertitles Analysis

Bad neighbours 2 Sorority rising -

These are all the inter-titles used within the trailer for Bad neighbours 2, as you can see they all follow the same pattern which clearly identifies genre of the film - which is a teen comedy. This genre is portrayed with the graffiti-like animation used especially as its something we often associate with teenagers. But also the block font of writing comes across as bold and intimidating, which creates the idea that the film is based upon rebellion as it appears almost stubborn. Despite this in the opening title we see an abbreviate style of text "NU" which relates to teenagers in a sense of social media, this is continued through the trailer with "Neighbors" another deliberate typo that is relevant to the genre and film.

Additionally although the graphite background would normally come across as dull and boring in this case it helps add to the rebellious life of teenagers. Also I would say that the titles do not limit their target audience, by including "Sisterhood" and "Parenthood" I feel like they aren't limiting themselves with their audience instead they are trying to achieve and reach out to a braoder audience.

Empire (2016) Magazine Analysis

This was one of the most anticipated films of 2016, with the new comedy-action theme being the first of its type for Marvel. I myself heard about the film through this very magazine, as it was identified that this film didn't have a huge marketing campaign. Nevertheless, taking a look at the magazine we are immediately brought to the attention of the colour scheme- this being predominantly red and white. Therefore allowing the red blood to stand out as well as the character himself- who is evidently the main character as he is the only character being displayed.

Also the  font and typography of the cover invites us to look closer into the film and for me it was the title which caught my eye originally-perhaps because it contrasted against the other colours or because the language used, makes the reader feel as if there will be some inside / exiting news about the film. And the word "Massive" exaggerates how good the film will be before you've even seen it.

Original marvel fans will be aware of the character, but for those who don't like you and me, we are reliant on the advertisement of a film, as we are told a lot about this character just from his position and stance. For example it is clear that he is a 'GOOD GUY' because we are never told a story from a bad guys point of view but its also possible that he is a Hero- given that he is wearing tightly fitting clothing and he is carrying what appears to be a signature weapon (the two swords). Whilst this poses a potential danger and mystery as the character is masked, we feel that we can associate with this protagonist as we see language such as  "Bleedin" and "Heck!" which create a fun character personalisation, something we haven't seen as Superhero fans, but the unseen and unrecognizable costume / mise en scene used, as well as lighting that focuses on the character, all suggest that this character will play an important role in the film.

The ratio of  images to text is large and this magazine uses considerably less texts of other films than it normally would - perhaps it is trying to focus on selling just one main film.

Overall I have to admit I like the simple style of magazine, in the sense that the reader is not overwhelmed with text and other advertisement, instead it focuses on and identifies the genre through focusing on the main character and selling the film this way.

Trailer Order Analysis / Shot List

Overall ,after looking at the idea of a shot list it has helped me understand the frequency and importance of shots, in the sense that without numerous shots at alternating angles a trailer could become slow and lacking fluidity. But I have also learnt that shots don't need to last long, this trailer in particular frequently changes shots with an average shot time of around 1-2 seconds. Therefore pointing out the importance of shots lists and storyboarding my idea, in order to create a fast-paced trailer. And although many of today's modern trailers are fast paced, there is also a lot of variety to the shots, which in this case creates a more dramatic tone. After having analysed the full trailer it is clear that close ups,two shots and medium shots are the most used with the majority of which  being clustered together within the trailer.
